About me: |
I remember the Our Lady of the Angels school fire very well. On December 1, 1958 I was a fifth grader at Central School in Des Plaines, IL. Many of the victims were the same age. Can remember clearly seeing the front page of the paper with the photos of all those who died. Also remember officials trying to identify victims on local TV. It must have been someone in the Cook County morgue but it was really scary!!
Later that month, I was hospitalized for appendix removal, and I shared a room, (I believe at Resurrection Hospital) with a 10 year old girl who had been severely burned. Often have wondered if it might have been someone from the OLA fire. She never spoke, cried a great deal.
It was not long after the OLA fire, Central School was torn down and a new school was built. Central School was exactly the same type of building, English basement and two floors above and even about the same age.
