About me: My father was the Chief of our neighborhood volunteer fire department at the time of the OLA fire and he never forgot it. He told me stories about it all my life, and it became a lifelong shared obsession of sorts. As a retired fireman, dad always checked out our schools, (and also my kids') and went to every open house. While being that volunteer fireman was not a paying job, he was so much a part of the "brotherhood" that many would think it was his ONLY job. Whenever he met a fireman at a restaurant, it meant an extra hour of conversation, which I NEVER had an issue with. We both have read To Sleep with the Angels (he "borrowed" my copy and I had to purchase a second, and I also read Michelle McBride's book. Dad passed in April of 2020 and my life is so empty. But every once in awhile I get on this site, re-read all the stories and both books, and head out to Hillside to visit the graves of these children like I used to do with my dad. I pray for these children and their families, and all of those affected by this horrific tragedy, and am grateful that my father was a part of this wonderful profession.
